What is Islam?
The complete, honest introduction to Islam — written for anyone curious about what Muslims believe and why.
Understanding Islam
Islam is a monotheistic religion — the belief that there is one God, the same God worshipped by Jews and Christians — and that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was His final messenger. With approximately 1.9 billion followers across every continent and culture, it is the world's fastest-growing religion. The word Islam comes from the Arabic root s-l-m, meaning peace. It carries the sense of "peace through submission to God." A Muslim is one who submits — not out of force, but out of sincere conviction.
Muslims believe that God has sent guidance to humanity throughout history through prophets including Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The Quran — Islam's sacred scripture — is understood as the final and preserved word of God, revealed to Muhammad in Arabia in the 7th century.
Today, Islam is practiced by people of every ethnicity and culture across every continent. It is not an Arab religion — only about 20% of Muslims are Arab. The largest Muslim populations live in Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.
The Almighty Allah has no sons, parents, partners nor associates.
The Almighty Allah was neither created nor born by anyone; He’s the Almighty.
There are no equal, superior, or lesser Gods.
"˹He is˺ the Originator of the heavens and earth. How could He have children when He has no mate? He created all things and has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of everything. That is Allah - your Lord! There is no God ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. ˹He is˺ the Creator of all things, so worship Him ˹alone˺. And He is the Maintainer of everything." Qur'an: Chapter 6:Verses 101-102
In Islam, we believe that Allah is the absolute one, the all-powerful and the all-knowing ruler of the universe. He is the creator of everything in existence.
Allah — The One True God
PROPHETS
Allah sent prophets to guide humanity — including Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all). They all brought the same message:
THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD AND HE ALONE IS WORTHY OF WORSHIP.
Say, ˹O believers,˺ “We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to Allah we all submit." Qur'an: Chapter 2:Verse 136
Creation Invites Reflection
When we observe the world around us — the balance in nature, the complexity of life, and the vastness of the universe — many people are naturally led to reflect on purpose and the existence of a Creator. Islam encourages this reflection. It calls people to think, observe, and recognize the wisdom and order in creation.
The complexity of the human body — its systems, its design, its precision — is something Islam invites every person to reflect on. Muslims see this as one of many signs pointing toward a Creator. This National Geographic documentary explores the remarkable engineering of the human form.

Humans are only a tiny part of a magnificent system, where millions of other species with different designs and complexity, all living in harmony and equilibrium. However, humans are blessed with superior intelligence which grants them the ability to consider the complexity of this whole creation and its purpose.

The Quran repeatedly calls humanity to reflect on the vastness of the universe. Muslims believe this scale — trillions of galaxies, each with billions of stars — points to a Creator whose power is beyond human comprehension. This short film puts Earth's size in cosmic perspective.
These observations have led countless people — scientists, philosophers, and ordinary individuals alike — to ask the same question: could all of this exist without intention behind it? Islam offers a clear and reasoned answer
"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason" Qur'an: Chapter 2:Verse 164
YOU WERE CREATED WITH PURPOSE
OWN CHOICE
We are created with intelligence, awareness, and free will. Each person has the ability to choose what to believe and how to live.
Islam teaches that life is a test — a temporary journey where our choices matter. On the Day of Judgment, every person will be held accountable for their actions and intentions.
This life is not without purpose. It is an opportunity to recognize the truth, turn to Allah, and live with meaning and direction.
BEING A MUSLIM
Being Muslim means willingly submitting to Allah alone — believing that there is no one worthy of worship except Him.
It means turning directly to Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and mercy, knowing that He is the Most Merciful and the Most Forgiving. To be Muslim is to live with purpose: to follow Allah’s guidance with sincerity, humility, and trust.
Muslim life is structured around five core practices — from the daily prayer to the annual fast of Ramadan — and a set of beliefs that span the nature of God, the prophets, and life after death. If you want to understand what Islam looks like in practice, the guide to becoming Muslim covers all of this in full.
